MOTS-C (10mg)
MOTS-c is a mitochondrial derived peptide, and that is what makes it unusual. It is a sixteen amino acid chain encoded not by nuclear DNA but by a short open reading frame inside the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. In other words the instructions for it sit in the mitochondria themselves rather than in the cell nucleus, which is why it is often described in the literature as a signal sent outward from the powerhouse rather than in to it.
Research attention has centred on metabolic regulation. Published work has examined AMPK pathway activation, glucose handling and insulin sensitivity, and the folate cycle, with animal studies reporting effects on metabolic flexibility and exercise capacity that led some researchers to describe it as an exercise mimetic. Circulating levels have also been reported to fall with age, which is the thread running through much of the longevity literature it appears in.
Where the evidence sits: MOTS-c is a relatively recent discovery and the bulk of the work is cell and animal research. Human data is limited, there are no completed large scale clinical trials, and it holds no medicines licence in the UK or anywhere else. It is supplied here strictly as a laboratory research chemical.
